Surgery Preparation / Recovery
If you are having surgery in our office, our staff will give you detailed instructions when your surgery is scheduled. Generally, you will not need anyone to accompany you and may drive yourself when your procedure is over. The In-Office Surgery section of our website has more detailed information about what to expect.
For those not having their surgery in our office, Dr. Gorman operates at the following locations:
- Mountain Empire Surgery Center
- Sycamore Shoals Hospital
- Holston Valley Outpatient Surgery Center
- East Tennessee Ambulatory Surgery Center
The scheduler in our office will give you pre-op instructions and you will get additional information from the facility at which you will have your surgery.
With the exception of very minor procedures, Dr. Gorman will personally call you on the evening of your surgery to make sure that you don’t have any questions and that you understand the post-op instructions. For the best recovery, it is very important to keep all your scheduled follow-up visits. You may use our normal phone number, (423) 282-5332, to call with questions or problems at any time – it is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In an emergency, call 911 or go immediately to your nearest hospital.
We have found that informed patients get the best results. Please take some time to review our patient education library where you can read about and watch videos relating to hand conditions and their associated surgeries. Also, Dr. Gorman has prepared the following informational handouts for your reference:
- About Having Hand Surgery
- Cast and Splint Care
- Hand Elevation Diagram
- Smoking Facts
They may be downloaded from the Forms section of this website.
